# 50th Anniversary of Transatlantic Very Long Baseline Interferometry

April 05, 2018

This week we mark 50 years since the first transatlantic very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) experiment. In April 1968, a historic event took place involving [MIT Haystack Observatory](https://www.haystack.mit.edu/) in Westford, Massachusetts, and its counterpart at [Onsala Space Observatory](http://www.chalmers.se/en/researchinfrastructure/oso/Pages/default.aspx) in Onsala, Sweden: the first transatlantic geodetic very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations. Read more about the history of VLBI experiments, of which EHT is a part, here: <http://news.mit.edu/2018/celebrating-50-years-transatlantic-geodetic-radio-science-0405>
